Virtual reality photos bring the LHC to life I love big physics. What captivates me is the contrasting scales: to explore the quantum realm to really get to the bottom of what made the universe tick shortly after the big bang you need gargantuan machines and giant detectors. I can tell you exactly when this love affair began. It was June 1990 and I spent the summer as a student at the CERN particle physics laboratory, near Geneva. Here I came face to face with one of the giant detectors built to study what happens when electrons and their antimatter nemeses, positrons, collide. It was a breathtaking sight. At 1.57 metres tall, I was dwarfed by the detector standing 12 metres high. Meanwhile the Large Electron Positron collider that smashed the particles together sat in a tunnel measuring 27 kilometres around. I was hooked. Today the same 27 kilometre tunnel that housed the LEP machine is home to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), which is due to circulate its first protons on 10 September. Four huge detectors have been built to study collisions between protons travelling shy of the speed of light. I ve been lucky to visit them all and they are truly massive. The biggest, called ATLAS, stands 25 metres high and is 46 metres long. It is the largest detector built at a particle collider and it is mind boggling in its complexity. Numbers are all very well. But, honestly, they don t get across the scale of this behemoth. I ve read heaps of articles about the LHC, seen lots air max women of photographs and even listed to the rap and they still don t capture the hugeness of the LHC. So I m totally thrilled to finally find something that does. Photographer Peter McCready specialises in so called virtual reality photos. It s a technique that has been around for about 9 years you ve probably seen 360 degree panoramic views of apartments on real estate agents websites. This is in a different league. McCready first visited CERN in 2005 and took these astounding panoramic views of the experiments and the LHC tunnel. By dragging the mouse, you can make yourself quite queasy as you spin around the accelerator and its detectors. My favourites are these shots of the ATLAS and CMS experiments. CMS weighs 12,000 tonnes and it was built above ground, then lowered 60 metres through a shaft. You can look up and see where it came from and appreciate what a monumental task this was. This one from ATLAS is taken from a gantry that is halfway up the detector. Look down if you dare! I am so excited that the LHC is finally starting up. Physicists have spent years speculating nike free 2.0 about what the LHC will find. Some of the more outlandish ideas include black holes, extra dimensions and time travellers. Do they really exist or are they figments of theorists overactive imaginations? We re at the start of the journey that s about to find out. Don t miss our special guide to the LHC in the 30 August issue of the magazine. Valerie Jamieson, deputy features editor (Image: Peter McCready)All comments should respect the New Scientist House Rules. If you think a particular comment breaks these rules then please let us know, quoting the comment in question. Man s technology has exceeded his grasp. The World is not Enough Zealous Nobel Prize hungry Physicists are racing each other and stopping at nothing to try to find the supposed Higgs Boson (aka God) Particle, among others, and are risking nothing less than the annihilation of the Earth and all Life in endless experiments hoping to prove a theory when urgent tangible problems face the planet. And the answer is, science is nike free uk what we do when we don t know what we re doing." And CERN spokesmodel Brian Cox follows with this stunning quote, "the LHC is certainly, by far, the biggest jump into the unknown."The CERN LHC website Mainpage itself states: "There are many theories as to what will result from these collisions,." Again, this is because they truly don t know what s going to happen. They are experimenting with forces they don t understand to obtain results they can t comprehend. If you think like most people do that They must know what they re doing you could not be more wrong. nike air max shoes By Anonymous on August 16, 2008 3:54 AM If they knew what was going to happen they wouldn t need to do the experiments. By Anonymous on August 16, 2008 12:37 PM Well, high energy collisions between large mass particles obviously never happen anywhere in the vastness of the whole universe apart from in man built machines because the universe is anthropocentric and we are the deciding factor in all things. All created from discoveries in science and physics. By Colin on August jordan air max 16, 2008 2:43 PM I m pretty sure these conditions have happened on Earth already, this will just be the first time we see them. By Anonymous on August 16, 2008 4:11 PM Hold on a minute! This intriguing pile of hardware is tucked away in a tiny corner of the surface of a small planet. Even the next generation but three the accelerator track round the circumference of the moon will be only a drop of small beer in this universe. By Diversity on August 16, 2008 5:18 PM I guess the next step is to build a Collider in orbit so that earth s gravity is out of the question.

Western style kimonos fizzle in Japan But apparently there s a limit. The Japanese appear willing to wear anything designed by prominent Westerners except that most traditional and respected Japanese garb, the kimono. In recent years, Western style kimonos have been introduced with great fanfare by an international coterie of designers, including Pierre Cardin, Emanuel Ungaro, and, most recently, Daniel Tribouillard, chief designer and general director of Leonard of Paris. With their Western style fashions selling for hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars, all of these designers are popular and respected here. And though the Leonard kimono has nike free run 5.0 pink been on the market for only a few months, the initial sales have been upsetting, according to Rikio Isaka, manager of the kimono department at Tokyo s Matsuya Ginza department store. In fact, at Matsuya s invitation only showing of the Leonards, only 15 of the 170 bright colored kimonos and obis sold. Sales have been similarly tepid at other highly publicized nike air max 1 premium shows at hotels and department stores throughout Japan. At first glance, bringing kimonos to Japan might seem a bit like importing oranges to Florida. Not so, says Tuyoshi Wada of Sankyo Seiki, the Japanese licensing firm that commissioned the Leonard kimono. In recent years, as Western style clothes have become the norm, kimono sales have dipped. It was hoped kimonos by popular Western designers could lure Japanese women back into their native pink nike air max dress. The firm was also careful to select a Western designer who is both popular with the Japanese and whose fashions have a vaguely Oriental flair. Tribouillard , whose fashion trademarks are bright colors and elaborate floral patterns, seemed to fit the bill. His Western clothes are also quite costly here, and it was this upper crust customer that Sankyo nike free 3.0 Seiki was hoping to interest in their Western style kimonos. Earlier this year he even boasted that he would sell 1,000 kimonos his first season, with a 40 percent increase the second year. But it appears that even Japan s most Westernized women want to keep a few aspects of their heritage entirely Japanese. If I were extremely wealthy nike free 2014 and could have hundreds of kimonos, then maybe I d like one designed by a Western designer, says Miki Ichiyanagi, a student at Tokyo University. I don t think a Western designer, no matter how good he is, can really understand the kimono for all it means and stands for, added Yukiko Yoshimoto, a secretary at a large corporation. The Leonard kimonos have also been criticized for their extravagant patterns and colors, which include turquoise blue and hot pink. Many kimonos come in bright colors, but the average young woman still chooses a kimono in pale pink, says Rikio Isaka of Matsuya Ginza. Everyone admits it takes a special type of woman to wear a Leonard kimono. What it takes is a wealthy woman. The Leonards are priced at around $5,000 for the kimono, with the obi, or long waistband, costing an additional $1,600. But apparently price is not a problem. Many women pay such prices for formal kimonos, and the creations of kimono craftsmen deemed Japan s Living National Treasures can cost as much as $100,000. Such kimonos are in fact considered the Japanese equivalent of Western haute couture; fashion conscious Japanese can spot the designs of Kako Moriguchi, Kotaro Shimizu, and Yoshimatsu Nambu as readily as some Westerners can identify a Chanel, a Givenchy, or a Saint Laurent. Tuyoshi Wada of Sankyo Seiki admits that no one expects women who own just one kimono to select a Leonard; this is still the kimono for the woman who has everything, and despite the early indications, the company is hoping for success. What their promoters are hoping for are more young women like Mariko Nakamura , an economics student. I think a Western designed kimono is fine, she says. Anything is all right as long as the kimono is pretty.

00 nike air max usa slackline If you want to experiment with a slackline but don t want to invest in expensive mountain climbing equipment, here s a way to try it out for just $5.00. CAUTION! This method nike free 5.0 review is not to be used as a highline! You will probably only get four or five uses out of the tape before it begins to fray. Once that happens you should replace the tape. This method should only be used to see if you like slacklining enough to invest in good equipment. 100 of polyester wire pulling tape. (5 per foot, but most electricians use it once and throw it away, so if you re resourceful you can get it for free) This set up is dangerous!!! Do not not use this set up! Being an experience slackliner, I know what safe and proper equipment is needed to have a safe slackline. Lots of these pieces of hardware can brake and cannot withstand the amount of pressure put on them. This may not be the case in the video, but notice how his slackline is only 6 feet long and he doesn t even walk on it. Instead, be safe, and go buy carabiners and strong webbing. Although a bit more expensive, it is safer, and will last nike air max men you a lot longer. This setup is entirely experimental! It is only intended to for you to determine your level of interest and see if purchase of a regular slackline setup is justified. THERE IS NOTHING DANGEROUS ABOUT THIS SETUP! The worst thing that can happen nike free womens is that you will fall two feet if the band breaks. I ve heard many hyped statements from slackline salesmen who threaten being impaled by flying metal and other ridiculous paranoid comments. nike run free 3 Wild and unfounded accusations of stresses that could never be generated by a person of any weight. Mentions of physics with no science to back it up. The list goes on. This is an experiment! Treat it as such. This is what I consider a "true" or perhaps a better term is a foundational "Instructable". Easily available materials obtained cheaply to make something useful! I would say that your tape might last longer if there was a diet included, but Instructables has a "be nice" comment policy, so I won t go there ; ) Seriously, I wonder if two layers of the tape might give you the same endurance as the commercial products? Possibly spot weld with epoxy every few inches, or even sew together with polyester thread.
