When you look through the program schedules at all the cooking shows on cable TV these days, you notice that there are something like 47 cake and cupcake competitions, and that food trucks and carts are seriously over exposed. But when it comes to vegetarian cooking, there s only a smattering of attention at places like the Food Network and the Cooking Channel, and that vegans are left out in the cold, which is strange given the growing mainstream acceptance of both approaches to eating. That changes at last! with the arrival of the nike free woman new public television series "Jazzy Vegetarian," which is produced by Oregon Public Broadcasting and begins airing nationally this month. The 13 episode first season stars Laura Theodore, who hosts a Web radio program with the same name, and who is an actual jazz singer herself, hence the show s "Jazzy" title. There have been a few vegan TV shows in the past, but Theodore says she wants to show how plant based eating can be homey and delicious, and anything but fringe. "There needs to be a show that takes classic American meals and makes them vegan," she says. "A show where anybody can look at it and say, That s something I make on a regular basis, and now I can make it vegan for my family, and they re going to love it. " We caught up with her recently at her home in New Jersey, and got her thoughts about the new TV show, her approach to cooking and the connections between music and cooking. Saturdays, beginning Oct. 15 Your show is called "Jazzy Vegetarian," yet everything you make is vegan. Is there a reason you re staying away from that word? After all, you do use it on the show. We ve been working on "Jazzy Vegetarian" since 2005, and when the concept was born, we were afraid to say "Jazzy Vegan" it just nike air max tn didn t sound right. Of course, in the last five or six years that word has become accepted, but we re already known as "Jazzy Vegetarian." In fact, the true sense of the word "vegetarian," in its original concept, was what we call vegan now. What is it you love about that zucchini lasagna recipe? It metamorphosed itself over the span of 30 years. Grandma, who s no longer with us, wrote me that recipe it was regular lasagna, and I made it the way she made it. When I became a vegetarian, I looked at this recipe and realized I could take out the meat and use mushrooms. And slowly over the years I started figuring out how to make the ricotta layer out of tofu, and I started experimenting with vegan cheeses and the filling. Then I realized I could make it lighter if I sliced zucchini lengthwise, and used them like noodles. My goal was to make something really tasty and moist, and I must say I did go through a lot of experimenting before I came to this recipe. Vegan cooking is such a growing trend. Why aren t we seeing more of it on TV? When you turn on the Food Network, you re not getting the information that vegetarian and vegan cooking tastes good. I think maybe I can spread some awareness that s not available in these other media platforms, so people know that they can eat this way, they can live this way, it s easy to do, you can buy it at your supermarket. You have six solo CDs. Tell me about the music side of your world. It s a long story. I started singing at the age of 3. I ve always loved singing. I began taking music classes and acting classes, and I studied and studied. My last CD a couple of years ago was a duo CD with the late, great Joe Beck. It s just me and Joe doing Peggy Lee tunes. Do you draw a connection between music and cooking? It s a complete connection. When I sing, the song is never the same way twice. When I go into the kitchen and I start making a recipe, it has the same feeling as improvising in jazz, because I m improvising the ingredients, especially when I m taking a traditional recipe and making it vegan.
