TR Forums low cost ugg boots View topic I ve just been given the option of buying a Hitachi 140GB "Fibre Chanel" HDD. The specs seem pretty good 10K rpm, 4.9ms womens ugg boot sale seek time, 4MB cache, 200MB/s average transfer rate but am unsure as to a: even what fibre channel HDD are and how they work and b: if I will even be able to fit one into my machine with a standard motherboard (the motherboard has SATA) Is it simply for servers, or can I, perhaps with a (cheap?) card or adapter use it in my desktop? If its not going to take much work, and extra cost to get it up and running (perhaps a PCI card?), it seems to cheap to pass up. actually, if you just want to use one drive, you can get by with a t card (essentially a terminator) to allow a direct HBA to drive connection; it ll cost less than $20. of course, you need a fibre channel host bus adapter, and the cheapest you can reasonably hope to find one of those, even used, is $325. Fibre channel drives tend to be cheaper than SCSI, so I see the temptation to go that route, just be aware that there s a requisite infrastructure upgrade (the HBA, the drive enclosure, etc.) needed to take advantage of the cheaper drives. there s a reason they re still mostly used for SANs; they really only start to make ugg boots brown economic sense when you get up in the terabyte range. The drive was going to cost 120 roughly $188, thats for a 140GB drive, which I did not think sounded too bad. However, with all the extra "bits" that are needed to get the drive up and running, and the cost of some of these bits it hardly seems worth it. Its only for a desktop, and the interest really was only because it seemed a cheap 140GB drive, no matter what the type. I m not prepared to spend the extra $300+ to get the thing even running will probably go the SATA route once its matured.
