Trials kick off for long There may be a gap in the market, the old adage goes, but is there a market in the gap? That s what Microsoft, BT, Samsung, Nokia and the BBC hope to find out in Cambridge, UK, over the next few weeks as they sale on ugg boots jointly test a wireless technology that s designed to exploit some of the most promising gaps on the planet: the unused "white spaces" between UHF digital TV frequencies. They hope to show that these frequencies can be used cheap ugg bots to boost the range of wireless connections offering a souped up version of Wi Fi that will keep laptops, smartphones and iPads online many hundreds of metres from our homes. The idea is that you switch on a white space router and it logs on to a database of the unused TV frequencies in your area. It then assigns your router a long range UHF frequency you can use for a given time. It sounds easy but there could be problems. Technically, slotting a signal into a given waveband is not easy unless expensive filter circuits ensure transmissions stay strictly within assigned slots. ugg If they don t, our supposedly pristine digital TV pictures could suffer interference. Yet expensive electronics will jack up white space device prices. Such are the issues the Cambridge TV White Space Consortium which also includes white space pioneers Neul, Cambridge Consultants, Spectrum Bridge and TTP will contend with in their trials which kick off tomorrow. There may be a further problem brewing for this tech, however: over the last few months a quiet patent landgrab has taken place. If I m not in my house I m unlikely to be using a laptop, instead it would be a phone or iPad etc. so I d be on a cell signal. Except for an edge case where I want to check my email on my phone in my back yard and want faster performance than the cell network, or if I m at a neighbor s house, I can t really see a use for this, and I certainly wouldn t pay extra for it. The Americans have had a "Wi Fi like" slow rate (1Mb) 900 Mhz system for many years it means strict line of sight is not essential and allows for greater reliability for outside links, public services, remote links to outlying buildings etc. At TV UHF frequencies being typically 400 650Mhz, the ability to offer NLOS (non line of sight) connection is better still. WiFi is great, but buth 2.4Ghz and 5.8 Ghz can be thwarted by little more than a bunch of wet trees. I hope the technology comes on stream quickly. The dongles will be cheaper to make en masse than Ghz band electronics, power output can be lower. Once released access points will soon come down to a sensible price once our friends in China start to gear up production.
